Johnny Hippocket 2 - Johnny Encounters Exchange Rates, Fees and Freight

Johnny Hippocket Waits for his Parcel

3 weeks after Johnny placed his order online he begins to worry. Johnny chose the cheapest freight option because saving money is what this is all about. But still 3 weeks is getting a little long and Johnny is worried* Hidden Cost. The new bloke at the ThingameJiggit club has been using his new ThingaMeJiggit every week for the last three weeks whilst Johnny waits for his. But Johnny saved over $100.00 didn’t he? It’s got to be worth the wait. Still, what if the ThingaMeJiggit site is not legitimate and they’ve just taken his money? What if they are legitimate but they have addressed the parcel incorrectly? Could they have sent it to Austria instead of Australia? What if it’s lost? Surely it would be insured wouldn’t it?

4 Weeks after the order is placed and the parcel still hasn’t arrived. He begins to think he should have paid a little extra and chosen the traceable freight method. .

Johnny decides to contact the ThingaMeJiggit store, but he notices that there is no telephone number. There is an online contact form though. So Johnny completes and sends the form* Hidden Cost. Johnny immediately receives an autoresponder reply from the Online ThingaMeJiggit Store stating that his custom is valuable and that they will respond within 5 business days.

Johnny now decides to do a little research* Hidden Cost and check the terms and conditions. Woops, shouldn’t that have been done before the order was placed? Yes, but who actually does this? Johnny learns that the freight method he chose is not traceable and not insured. If he had paid an extra $15.00 he could have had traceable freight, but still uninsured. In fact, non of the Online ThingaMeJiggit store’s freight is insured* Hidden Cost. He gets onto a few ThingaMeJiggit forums and reads through the comments, questions and replies. Johnny learns that the Online ThingaMeJiggit company is legitimate, but that deliveries can sometimes be slow. He also learns that he shouldn’t hold his breath waiting for a reply to his form, and if he does get a reply it will most likely just refer him to the terms and conditions that he has now already read.

Johnny never receives a reply from the Online ThingaMeJiggit company to his online form request.

Hidden Costs

Johnny’s worry over the whereabouts of his parcel causes a few more grey hairs and shaves 20 minutes off his life. With each passing day of worry, the number of grey hairs increases and his life expectancy decreases exponentially. Thankfully Johnny’s parcel arrives after 4 weeks so he doesn’t worry himself to death. But he does end up spending $50.00 more on hair dye over the course of his life, than he would have if it wasn’t for this single incident.

Time spent chasing his parcel via online forms is not actually a hidden cost for Johnny because he doesn’t value his time the way others do. To Johnny, the $100.00 (is it $100.00?) saving is all that matters, so a little extra time (and worry) chasing parcels is quickly overlooked. It would be a hidden cost however to people who value their time.

No insurance is offered by the ThingaMeJiggit Online store so whilst Johnny may have saved a few dollars on the item, if it is damaged or lost there is no recourse. The expense of replacement or fixing the product lies with Johnny. Had Johnny bought from a local store he could have checked that the goods were undamaged when he collected them. Online stores may or may not offer insurance, but it is more likely a locally situated store (online or physical) will be able to offer insurance than one shipping from overseas. It’s also less likely the parcel will be lost or damaged when it is bought locally.
