Glossary - Flange

A protruding rim, edge, rib, or collar around a cyclindrical shaped object. A flange on a bearing protrudes on one edge of the outer ring allowing for location of the bearing in a housing without allowing the bearing to push through to the other side. The flange then allows for easy removal of the bearing when it is ready for replacement. Flanges can be very useful in a production process where bearings need to be located in housings quickly and accurately.
