Glossary - Nominal

In name only. A 3mm nominal diameter would specify only that the diameter is 3mm, but an engineer would need to delve a little deeper to find the tolerances of the item. For example, a nominal 3mm shaft may have tolerances of +0.000/-0.008 or it may have tolerances of +0.010/-0.000. It would not be possible to design a precision project based solely on nominal diameters. On the other hand, some applications only require that the nominal size is known. The tolerances of a split pin to suit a nominal 3mm hole would not need to be known.
