316 - Materials - Technical Information - Hobby and Engineering
316 Stainless SteelSimilar Grades MBA Products made from this material 316 Stainless Steel is non-magnetic and very corrosion resistant. Common products made from 316 Stainless Steel include fasteners, shafting, couplings and some gears. A limited range of bearings can be obtained in 316 stainless steel, but it should be noted that they are not heat treated, and tolerances are not as precise as for SAE52100 or AISI440C. If your application requires a harder material see SAE52100 Steel or AISI440C Stainless Steel. Bearings made from 316 Stainless Steel can be run fully immersed in water. NOTE! 316 Stainless can become slightly magnetised when cold worked. This could result from the continuous rolling motion of balls within the bearing races. The main component of the steel is Fe (Iron) with the addition of the elements shown in the following chart
For less corrosion resistance but better machinability see 304 Grade or 303 Grade If hardening by heat treatment is required see 416 Grade Log in and start browsing the HES Online Store. |
