Noise - Bearings - Technical

Bearing Noise

The noise levels of bearings depend essentially on the following factors

  • geometric precision and quality of the tracks and balls
  • cleanliness of the bearings and the lubricant
  • precision with which the play is taken up when mounting the bearings
  • value and direction of loads
  • rotation speed

Some steps that can be taken in selection of bearings for low noise applications include

  • Select a high precision bearing
  • Increase the viscosity of the lubricant used
  • Select standard clearance (too high clearance can result in impact contacting of the balls on the races, whilst too low clearance may result in squealing due to binding).
